How to Maximize Design Potential in a Cozy Kitchen

When I first saw the Brentwood Village kitchen I knew I could take it from basic 90s white laminate to a stylish haven. The space was small for a family kitchen, but the challenge of limitations invites the the potential for endless creativity . Challenge accepted.

Understanding Small Spaces

Designing small spaces requires careful planning. Clever storage solutions and material choices can not only make an area feel more spacious but also elevate its overall look. These opportunities were embraced and smart choices made like pushing the new bifold doors to the deck by a 3' to create a longer wall on which to place floor to ceiling storage. The tall wood cabinets house the pantry, appliance garage, and the built-in panel ready refrigerator. Keeping items neatly stored in the vertical space makes the room feel bigger. Coving the ceiling also creates an optical illusion of a taller ceiling height.

Use of Color and Light

Light colors, such as the creamy off white of the painted cabinets, plaster surround hood, and the white marble counters and backsplash create an airy environment. The white oak wood was whitened by 10% as well. The material palette was kept minimal so as not to overwhelm the small space. Adding more light fixtures with wall sconces and a linear pendant over the island added sparkle.

Incorporating Texture and Patterns

Adding texture can create depth and warmth in a small room. The hand painted tile on the face of the island and the layering in of the antique runner rug enrich the space, making it more inviting and feel lived in.

Outdoor Integration

Blending the green space of the backyard with the kitchen by installing a wall of bifold glass doors floods the small room with beautiful dappled light. Access to the back yard deck with an outdoor table extends the size of the kitchen when the bifold doors are open. Creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow increases the kitchen's usability and ambiance, making it feel larger.
