To create the best design, we need to know about the room. Photos are terrific, but room
dimensions are very important too. We use these to build a 3D model of the room and visit it
virtually, to experience the space like an on-site designer.
Step 1: Print this page so that you can use the blank area of graph paper to help you draw
straight lines. Don't worry about keeping your sketch to scale.
Step 2: Start in one corner of the room and use a stiff metal tape measure to record the length
of each wall in feet and inches from corner to corner. Work your way around the perimeter
of the room. Having a friend hold the end of the tape measure helps makes it easier.
Step 3: Note the location and width of windows and doors (including closet doors). How high off
the floor and how tall are the windows? Which way do the doors swing?
Step 4: Where are the electrical outlets, telephone and data jacks, cable boxes, heating/AC
units, and vents on the walls? Tell us how high off the ground each is and how far from
the wall corner.
Step 5: Measure the ceiling height and let us know if any lights hang from the ceiling.
Step 6: Give dimensions of big furniture items like sofas and tables. Are there any built-ins
like bookshelves we should know about? Please give us those dimensions too.
Step 7: Finally, include any additional notes we should know about.
