Overdyed Rugs

Friday, April 26th, 2013

I remember seeing the Color Reform rugs from ABC Carpet and Home years ago and as much as I would have liked to forget about them, I still find myself smitten with not only the idea, but also the look. Its like they tailor made a product for me: salvage an original vintage piece into something new and modern. Super saturating  seriously beat up Oriental and Persian rugs with color dye so that they become something new and artfully beautiful. The patchwork version takes the salvage idea up a notch by being able to save even more rugs by just using remnants. Luckily, this rug concept is finally “trending” which means you can test drive it from cheaper retailers like OverstockRugs USA, and West Elm. The rugs aren’t authentically distressed, but they have captured the right look.

Rustic Modern Bathrooms

Thursday, December 20th, 2012

How to achieve that clean, modern, yet rustic bathroom:

  • lots of white : white penny tile, Carrera marble stone, white hex tile, white ceramic sinks and plumbing fixtures
  • vessel sinks and wall mounted faucets for the modern touch
  • salvaged wood for the rustic and warm feel: shelves, vanity cabinet, even toilet seat cover.

Take a look at this gorgeous vanity from Matteo Thun. So easy to recreate with a nice slab of salvaged wood and the right plumbing fixtures.

Its really hard to find the vanity you like for your vessel sink and wall mounted faucet. And custom vanity cabinets are quite expensive. Make your own, just like this converted dresser via Color Me Carla.

In fact, check out the rest of this handsome room.

Peel Away the Layers

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Lately I am drawn to images of peeling plaster exposing beautifully aged brick walls behind it, or just peeling paint. It must be a carry over from the industrial salvage look of taking over abandoned urban lofts. If by some chance you have inherited this rare situation inyour homes, don’t repair it. Instead, embrace the texture and layered architectural look it provides.

Gray Paint + Furniture

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

The idea started with this dresser – the most attractive shape and shade of gray. I’m thinking of switching out the perfectly acceptable espresso dressers in my bedroom for a painted Craigslist find just because. But do I really want to undertake the search for the right piece (nice shape, good price, bad finish) and then start the painting process just because?

I found lots of tips here for painting furniture. Then, I saw the products from Atelier Chariavi via Decor8:

And now I’m kind of smitten but non-committal to the idea. Its gotta be gray though. If the right piece turns up….then we will have a reason, right?
