Scandi Midcentury in Silverlake

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Things are gearing up for the summer and getting quite busy around here since we got back from vacation. When things get busy, the blog falls to the wayside. But I just wanted to drop a line and include you in what’s going on. On the boards, we have a cool Scandinavian minimalist meets vintage midcentury modern house in Silverlake. Look at the Pinterest board I created to get a sense of where the house is going. Not much remodel work – the scope includes some paint, new lighting, scraping of the popcorn ceiling, and removal of upper cabinets for open shelving in the kitchen. And lots of good vintage midcentury pieces to give the home character, old kilim rugs and beat up leather, a bit retro, a bit eclectic, but edited to feel modern and uncluttered. This project is just so me!

Lighting for the dining room isn’t finalized. Here are the options. Which would you pick?

Also up for debate is the bed and wallpaper accent all for the master bedroom. I think I woudl go with the first bed since it allows for eclectic nightstands. What about you?

The den is masculine and manly for our client. He is bringing the Knoll sofa with him. The rest open.

Don’t forget the kitchen. Here is the style and mood we are going for before we have any actual drawings. Shopping for unique and original midcentury goodies will be the best part. I already did a “research trip” to the Long Beach flea market this past weekend to see what’s out there. When the client takes possession of the house in early June, we can actually pull the trigger on these pieces.

The Week in Instagram

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

Guys, we are off for a week starting today for a sun filled, cocktail infused, sandy toed vacation. I will report back upon my return. My hint to you is “mahalo” and have a great first week of May.

1) My mister turned 4 years old. His cake was a stunner thanks to Sabba and Safta. 2) Alec flew a kite at the beach. The gift wa sfor Lev, but maybe really for him? 3) Moments like this one makes having two worth all the effort. 4) Fighting crime is a full time job and he means business. 5) When your son asks for nail polish, the color mint mojito is really the only way to go. 6) I had a little fun getting supplies for the beach.

Midcentury Modern Spruce Up – Play Room

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

D contacted me 5 months into her pregnancy about helping her mid-century ranch house find its roots. Somehow a Mediterranean Tuscan agenda had taken over and she wanted to find a way to love her home more. She was in full nesting mode and we tackled the play room, the guest powder room, and the main entertaining area in time to finish days before her due date. The budget was low because D and her family may not stay in this house much longer so they didn’t want to invest major bucks. They just wanted it to look better for them and also if they decide to sell it. I’m glad to report she is now enthralled with the changes and I have the before and after pictures to prove it.

The play room was first on the agenda. It was kind of a messy mess and she wanted her two year old toddler to be able to utilize it, in style. I changed the layout for her and offered some new pieces to give it a more midcentury retro feel. A lot of graphic elements and an edited color scheme. She implemented these changes right away and was happy to have the play room is good shape immediately.

Notice the terrific post and beam structure of the breezeway between the kitchen and the garage that was converted to an enclosed family room. It was just overloaded with junky furniture and play things.

Here are the spec boards for the new scheme. Goodies from Land of Nod, CB2, prints and pillows from Etsy, mixed in with the credenza and sofas that were already hers.

And here is the space after. Huge improvement, don’t you think? I’ll let this all sink in and post about the living room and powder room tomorrow.

Everything You Need To Outfit A Sunroom

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

I pulled together a modern organic design scheme for a sun room that was featured on Houzz.  I love every item in this collection and wish I had a sun room to put them in myself. The good news is that even if you don’t have a sun room, you can use some of these elements in a casual dining or lounge area indoors this summer to make for a lovely entertaining ambiance. If you want to see where to purchase each item (and more) on this board, all the info is in the Houzz ideabook.

New Dining Room Scheme

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Sometimes things are perfectly fine and good and yet we, I mean I, still feel the urge to mix it up. Take my dining room for example. Everything is AOK in a traditional and functional sense. It looks good. But lately, I know it can look great if we swap out some key pieces.

new dining room

The existing fan is silly. We never use it and the light is so low we need a secondary floor lamp to see our food. Our bedroom gets hot in the summer so I think it makes sense to move the fan up there. And in its place, finally take on the DIY challenge of the Lindsey Adelman chandelier. I was intimidated in the past and kind of forgot about it, but now it seems like its back on everyone’s radar and I want to do it. The parts have been ordered. This is happening.

As much as I like my midcentury Broyhill style hutch, I have learned that I am a stower, not a shower, and seeing all these objects on display doesn’t make me happy. I’ll sell it and bring in a vintage midcentury low sideboard instead. It will sit under the window and provide storage for all those dishes and glasses. The reconfiguration should give the seating around the dining table some breathing room. I haven’t found a vintage piece yet, but they aren’t too hard to find with my craigslist skills :)

The recently aquired bentwood Thonet chairs I’m keeping. The Stokke highchairs too. Both are natural wood. Now I’m toying with the idea of swapping out the glass dining table with a white one. I’m not sure Parsons is my style, its a placeholder. But I’m over the glass and I think white would brighten up the space. I have to get Alec on board with the table swap though. He really likes our current table.

I’ll let you see how this little update comes along. Its nice to flesh it out in virtual space first and talk through it to see if I like it. That’s the plan right now.

This Week in Instagram

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Recently I was scared silly over a copyright infringement notice. It turned out to be completely meritless, but it did make me reassess my blog. I took down more than half my posts to date if they had any images from other designers or photographers that may be called into question at a later date. I know we all “link with love” but I don’t think that holds up legally. So moving forward, this blog will no longer feature work or items that inspire me unless I have gotten express permission from the source. Instead, it will chronicle things I create, large or small, thereby producing original content. Hopefully, this shift will force me to be more hands on and create more things!

I’ve become addicted to Instagram (follow me @nataliemyers) as the new social networking site to visit because I am attracted by all things visual. I am perpetually snapping photos of things that make me smile during the day and seeing what my friends and compatriots are up to.  Each week, I’ll give you a highlight of my best Instagrams. We’ll see where this goes.

Happy Friday.

1) I found these amazing teak live edge slabs just begging to be turned into coffee tables. 2) Things were shifted around in Lev’s room. 3) This vintage lamp induced a bedroom dresser restyle. 4) Good thrifting for Valentine’s day. 5) Lev indulges in 2 hour long baths. 6) I scored two Stokke chairs for $50 each on Craigslist.

Urban Cowboy Living Room

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

My client K is a glamorous girl from Austin who is living temporarily in LA. She wanted a super feminine retreat of a bedroom. Lots of white, metallics, frills (bedroom reveal to come soon). Moving into the living room, she wanted to balance it out with a more masculine space that wouldn’t be off putting to guests. Since she doesn’t know how long she will stay in LA, she wanted inexpensive pieces so that she wouldn’t feel bad if she had to unload the furniture on Craigslist in a few months when her stay was over. I’m really digging this uber-budget friendly scheme that does not look cheap.

Some Craigslist finds, some Cost Plus World Market, some midcentury knock offs. Ebay, Etsy, Amazon, and even Target accessories. No Ikea allowed on this one (except the curtains).

Upper West Side Bedroom

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

My latest e-design was working on a master bedroom in NYC. For Manhattan, this bedroom is ginormous, but for the rest of the country it was a tight squeeze to fit in the owner’s existing furniture and a separate work area. I believe the arrangement I came up with does the trick.  The mix of modern, vintage, and ethnic created the sophisticated and serene space the client was seeking. I would steal a few of these elements for myself if I were to do my bedroom over.
