California Dreaming

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Lev is so lucky to be growing up in sunny California and I think he does appreciate his station in life. He loves California as much as his parents and we decided to show our pride by displaying a flag in his bedroom.

His room layout got a remix when we upgraded his bed to the PB Teen locker bed. This thing is solid. The bed orientation changed from against the wall and under the window which I felt was awkward to floating mid room since I no longer worry about him falling out of bed in the middle of the night.

Now the room has been split up into more zones, for playing, for dressing, sleeping, and even a little reading nook. It feels bigger. Everything else stayed as is since I loved his rug, Hudson Bay blanket, and midcentury vintage dresser, but it all looks more pulled together and legit now. Its the real deal big boy’s room.

I’m happy to report he likes the new look and actually sleeps better at night. Both the kids enjoy hanging about.

Pretty Pegs

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Neato idea that I spotted at Design Sponge – a company called Pretty Pegs offers a line of cute and contemporary peg legs to replace those standard  scary ugly 2×4 blocky legs that comes on so many Ikea sofas and bed frames. This is a great solution to instantly upgrade the look and style of your Ikea pieces into something that you won’t be embarrassed of.  They are even customizable by color. The only problem is that some of the pegs are as costly as the actual furniture piece. If it means overall you can afford the piece that now has a designer look and feel, it is justified and opens up so many new possibilities…

Dwell Studio Furniture

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Have you heard that Dwell Studio has just released a line of furniture. Its a welcome addition with its vintage eclectic feel. The colors and materials are just right, but what actually caught my attention was the room styling. Each room feels mature and comfortable, with just the right colors and textures. Watch out West Elm.

Midcentury Modern Dressers

Monday, August 15th, 2011

My strange addiction is to mid-century dressers. Whenever I see one on Craigslist at a steal I want to bring it home. If I can justify the usefulness of it and arrange for delivery, I do! But most times, I let it go onto a better home. Each one seems to be more interesting than the next. The rich wood tones, the sculptural curves of the handles and drawer fronts, the retro styled hardware, and those cute little legs. It seems like each one is more special than the next so the next time you see one, take a second look. They work in bedrooms, nurseries (the perfect height for changing pads), living room media centers, entry way consoles, and dining room buffets. They usually come off looking more modern than mid-century and are so affordable compared to current reinterpretations of the same styles. Don’t these all just scream “take me home with you”.

Musical Chairs

Monday, August 8th, 2011

I seem to have been a little bed obsessed this past weekend, probably because I didn’t sleep very well. Let me shift focus to dining. Q: What’s a great way to create a an intentionally eclectic look on a minimal budget for your dining room or eat in kitchen? A: scouring the thrift shops and flea markets for a collection of mismatched chairs that each personify a style movement and look like an ode to industrial design. Collecting the chairs will be fun, no matter what style of table you have it will all (mis)match, and you won’t stress about the cost of buying 4-6 new matching chairs. You can even throw a bench into the mix to really reduce the stress levels.

Jenny Lind Beds

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

I was telling my husband about a Jenny Lind twin bed that I hadn’t made it on time to buy on Craigslist and he had no idea what I was talking about. “A spool bed”, I clarified…still a blank stare. So for him, and also you who may not know what these are, Design Sponge did a good history lesson on the origins of this style bed. Classic Americana, that can look quite modern due to its simple and organic shapes.

This style of beds got on my radar when it was featured years ago in Domino. Its kind of perfect as two twin beds in a children’s room. That and Buddhist prayer flags as a decorative garland – interesting.

But I wasn’t convinced they were to my liking until I saw this girls’ room in Design Sponge. She painted that accent wall, its not wallpaper!

And by the time I saw this spartan adult model  at The Smithy, I was smitten. This is exactly how I would incorporate a Jenny Lind bed into a room. Basic white backdrop.

Here’s another adult version from Canadian House and Home – a nice guest bedroom solution.

Morrocon Leather Poufs

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Yes, these round little guys are still popular. They add such worldly bohemian charm to traditional or modern rooms. Luckily, now there are more sources then ever to snag one. They come in all colors.

PCH by MASH Studios

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Still on the furniture kick, MASH Studios can do no wrong by me. I love their modern designs and their studio is just down the road from us. Named after the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, the PCH series is a combination of beautiful plantation grown teak, accented with polished aluminum panels.

Gray Paint + Furniture

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

The idea started with this dresser – the most attractive shape and shade of gray. I’m thinking of switching out the perfectly acceptable espresso dressers in my bedroom for a painted Craigslist find just because. But do I really want to undertake the search for the right piece (nice shape, good price, bad finish) and then start the painting process just because?

I found lots of tips here for painting furniture. Then, I saw the products from Atelier Chariavi via Decor8:

And now I’m kind of smitten but non-committal to the idea. Its gotta be gray though. If the right piece turns up….then we will have a reason, right?
